City Essay: Pradeep Vyawahare




Houston city is in the state of Texas in the United States of America and is considered one of the most populated and diverse cities. It is situated in the southeast part of Texas near the Gulf of Mexico. Houston is relatively a new city and was founded on August 28, 1836; the city was named after General Sam Houston, who was president of the Republic of Texas. Discovery of oil in the year 1901 has resulted in establishment of big companies and is responsible for rapid increase in the population of Houston. Houston is home of the world’s largest concentration of healthcare, called Texas Medical Center, and the research institution NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Houston is the number 1 job creator city in the US and ranks second in the US in number of Fortune 500 companies after New York City.
Houston is one of the biggest innovative cites in the US because of its research in healthcare. The Texas Medical Center is the largest employer in Houston. Houston has 21 hospitals, eight academic and research institutions and 50 other related non-profit organizations. Apart from that Houston is a big center for the energy industry in the United States which is responsible for high economic growth and increase in population. This sector provides 3.4% of all the jobs in the Houston area and because of that the unemployment rate of Houston is way below the national level.
Houston is a port city and responsible for international trade from its ports. Houston port is the largest in international tonnage handled and third in terms of trading value. This also makes Houston a place full of jobs. The fact that Houston is strong in the energy sector and close to Latin American countries has attracted and established more than 100 foreign-owned companies between 2008 to 2010. Houston is a home for America’s astronaut corps and a significant research center and employer where astronauts are trained to go to space.
Houston, being a highly populated and economically vibrant city, is still very good and affordable for living conditions. Considering the Living cost adjustments, Houston has the highest pay in the US at around $73,000. Also, Houston is the most racially and ethnically diverse large metropolitan area in the US. The Anglo population in Houston is 39.7%, compared to 48.9% in New York. The Latino population is almost equal to the Anglo population and the Asian population is rapidly growing. Including diversity, food in Houston is also diverse specifically Vietnamese food is well established because of the huge Vietnamese population. The New York Times called Houston one of the country’s most exciting places to eat.
Housing is easily affordable, and Houston did not experience a bubble during the recession like other places in the country did. The University of Houston and Rice University are two of the top universities of United States. Houston has unique and world class museums and cultural landmarks. Considering all the facts, Houston is great place to live and travel. It is economically vibrant is racially diverse, has great food, has better healthcare research, is affordable to live in and its beauty makes it one of best cities in the world. (Pradeep Vyawahare)
