City Essay: Tabriz

Tabriz:
Tabriz is one of the biggest and oldest cities in Iran; it is also the most populated city in Iranian East Azerbaijan. With the population of 1.6 million, it is the most populated and developed metropolitan area in the northwest of Iran. Although the tourism industry has not been well developed in Iran for political reasons, since Tabriz is one of most important industrial poles in Iran, many visit this city every year for business and pleasure purposes from different countries and cities. In this essay, I will discuss Tabriz’s architecture, culture, and souvenirs.
Tabriz, with 4500 years of history, is an ancient city and has been one of the historic capitals on Iran. There are many sites to visit from different historical eras in Tabriz, but there are three must see sites which are: Grand Bazaar of Tabriz, Blue Mosque, and the Arg. Grand Bazaar of Tabriz is the biggest covered bazaar in the world, and although it is very old, it is still operating. In this bazaar one can find spices, carpets, jewelry and almost everything. Although everything is very cheap in the bazaar in comparison to the city, visiting the bazaar would not be mainly for shopping but it would be for observing the traditional setting of a shopping mall and for its architecture. The Blue Mosque and the Arg are both earth structures from 14th century, and both have survived through several major earthquakes, revolutions, and destruction. The blue mosque is famous for its interior pure blue color and Arg is the remainder of the military castle.
While visiting Tabriz, one thing the tourists would notice is people’s culture. People in Tabriz are very friendly, and they love foreigners and guests. If you are a foreigner with blonde hair and you speak a different language, there is a chance that people would circle you. If not they would stare at you, hoping that they knew your language so they could communicate with you. Many people in Tabriz speak broken English, but that would not stop them from communicating with tourists; people in Tabriz would love to invite foreigners to their shops and even to their homes for dinner.
If one visits Tabriz, there is a set of souvenirs they would want to buy before they leave. Tabriz is registered as the “city of craft and carpet” and it has one of the finest handmade carpet and rug industries in the world. In addition to carpets and rugs, there are other handmade souvenirs which are smaller in size, and more appropriate for transportation; this includes silverware, enameled metal and woven textile.
Tabriz is an old city with a rich heritage, and it is one of the industrial tourism poles in Iran. Foreigners who come to Tabriz for business purposes end up visiting the city. This essay discussed some interesting knowledge about Tabriz; the must-see sites, peoples culture, and must buy souvenirs. (Sahar)
