Writing System
Assignment
Over the years a number of online
tools have become available which helps us in shaping our style of writing and
formatting an essay. These tools have helped in linking the thoughts of the
writer and the reader and certainly made our lives easier. I believe these
tools have helped me a long way by saving my time and improving the quality of
my work.
The first and foremost tool which has helped me in correcting my grammar is Microsoft Word’s inbuilt spelling and grammar check. Microsoft Word helps in recognizing any spelling error by underlining the word in red. We can right click on the line with our mouse and fix the error. Anything with a wiggly green line under it denotes a grammatical error. These tools can be turned on and off as per our choice. Microsoft Word in 2002 introduced another feature of blue squiggly lines which identifies formatting inconsistencies. I understood the logic behind this when I did ‘Parser Project’ in Computer Science department under Dr. J. Nelson Rushton. In this project we developed an application in Python language (a programming language) that analyses a string of words conforming to hypothetical rules of grammar. The application takes input data builds a data structure and checks for correct syntax in the process just as Microsoft Word does (obviously Microsoft Word has a wide range of grammatical rules and a huge dictionary compared to our hypothetical one). Personally, Microsoft’s tools have helped me over the years by saving a lot of time.

The second tool in my writing system
is the Merriam-Webster dictionary and thesaurus for the gigantic collection of
words, synonyms and applications it has. Usually in my writings when I am stuck
on something or looking for a word the dictionary comes to my rescue. Though I
have an idea on how to express myself, that word or phrase does not click my
mind. Merriam-Webster’s gigantic pool of words has always been helpful in bringing
the best connotations of my writing. After finishing any article when I am
reviewing it, it is quite common that I substitute few words with idiomatic
phrases from my original paragraph from its thesaurus.
The last tool which I adopted in my writing is the APA (American Psychological Association) style citation. For this I use Citation Machine (a Chegg service) which helps citing in MLA and Chicago as well. It helps in citing any book, magazine, newspaper article, website or journal in standard APA style. This user-friendly application has helped me in my research publications, projects and assignments throughout. It is basically a program which asks for all necessary details of the source and then generates the citation in seconds.

In my opinion, Microsoft Word’s
inbuilt grammar, Merriam-Webster’s dictionary and thesaurus and the Citation
Machine has reduced the time and effort I need for writing an essay or an
article.
