City Essay- The Steel City

The Steel City
Thomas Carlyle in a lecture in Manchester said, “The nation which gains control of iron soon acquires the control of gold." Jamshetji Tata got the idea of building a steel city when he met steelmakers of Pittsburgh. Jamshedpur, known as the "Steel City" of India, is one of the best-planned townships (Jamshedpur, 2016, Wikipedia, The Free Encylopedia).                                                                  Located in eastern India, Jamshedpur is the seventh cleanest city in the country. It surprises many that being an industrial city, Jamshedpur is one of the most beautiful towns in India. It has broad roads lined up with trees on either side, a number of playgrounds and parks. Unlike other cities in India, you would find proper disposal of garbage. These are the first few things you will notice in the city. Most of the residential areas are built and maintained by the Tata group have beautiful design, ample recreational parks and golf courses. The Jubilee Park is one of the major attractions of the city.
Quality education has always been an attraction for the city. Jamshedpur’s literacy rate is much higher than the national average. Jamshedpur is known to have some of the best schools in the country. Regardless of being a small town, Jamshedpur is home to the National Institute of Technology, one of the top engineering institutes of the country. Xavier School of Management is the top ranked private MBA School in India is also located in Jamshedpur. Therefore, it is one of those cities, which has a lot of young population.                                                                                                           Jamshedpur is one of the best places for food lovers. Of all the places I have visited in my life, Jamshedpur is home to the best street foods. A popular food of Eastern India called ‘litti’ has many shops across the city. It is dough patties filled with spiced gram powder and baked on a coal fire (Mallick, A.,2014, June 14). You will find many food trucks around the market. Vendors sell food items in carts near bus stops. Surprisingly, you will find good non-regional cuisines in Jamshedpur. Jamshedpur is also home to a number of sweet shops, which are amongst the best in the country.                    The core of the city is Tata Steel one of the largest and best Steel producers in the world. People from all parts of the country have settled in this small industrial town. It has a very cosmopolitan population with a good mix of cultures. Greenery, education and popular foods from all regions make Jamshedpur a place one must visit.
